Dear Parents and Carers,
This week has certainly ended in contrast to last week, with the warm spring sunshine being replaced with a bitterly cold wind. This was certainly felt by myself and several other members of staff who went to watch the football matches on the school field yesterday afternoon! Two really battling performances from both our girls' and boys' teams and I am only sorry that we did not get the wins both teams were so desperate for. I would like to pay tribute to the effort put in by the children who represented our school and also to all of the children at St Philip Howard.
This week we hosted several parent workshops here at De Havilland, for both multiplication table success in Year Four and an understanding of the phonics which we teach in Reception and Year One. I would firstly like to place on record my thanks to all of the parents who took the time to attend these and show a real commitment to supporting their child's education. I would also like to thank my staff, who work hard to prepare these types of events to ensure your children are receiving the best possible support at home in order for them to show the progress they are capable of. I do have to also express my disappointment that more parents did not attend. These sessions are designed to provide valuable insights and resources to support your child’s learning and development. We understand that schedules can be busy, but your participation plays a crucial role in building a strong home-school connection. Over the next few weeks, I will be reaching out to ask you what formats would make these workshops more accessible and beneficial for you to ensure we can work together to ensure these sessions meet your needs and help your children succeed.
I also wanted to share with you today a summer term date for your diary. To celebrate De Havilland celebrating its 20th anniversary, on Friday 20th June we will be hosting a colour run here at school. To put it simply, this essentially consists of the children (and staff) running along a short course and being sprayed with the De Havilland colours so that we all end up looking something of a colourful mess! We are currently exploring ways in which we can fund this event and we will share our ideas with you after the easter holidays.
Whatever your plans are for this weekend, I wish you a very pleasant one and look forward to seeing all of the children on Monday.
Mr. Bostock
Early Years News
We kicked off our week with a visit from some special farmers at Acorn Farm! They lent a helping hand with a variety of tasks, from milking the cows to shearing the sheep, giving us a fantastic introduction to our new Talk for Writing text, Stuck in the Mud. We’ve started mapping out the story and have had so much fun exploring muddy-themed activities—playing Stuck in the Mud, creating mud paintings, and more! In maths, we’ve been diving deeper into the number 5, with a continued focus on our song Five Little Speckled Frogs. Well done, Acorns! Keep up the great work!
This week, Reception received a lovely parcel, but unfortunately, the horrid goblin had chained the present. We had to break a series of codes to find the correct key. When we opened our present, we found a new book and a little bee to look after. The bees were orphans, so we had to make a new home for them and a queen to keep them safe. We have been doing lots of sequencing, learning about the problems within our class story, and writing instructions for how bees can have a bath.

Key Stage 1 News
The children have shown great curiosity this week and have asked lots of questions, especially about The Great Fire of London. We have begun to research the fire, finding out when it was, how it started and who was responsible for it. The children have shown lots of interest in their history learning and have been using books and resources around the classroom to find out extra facts. We are looking forward to learning more next week, when we will focus our learning on why the fire was able to spread so quickly. Great job Year 1!
What an exciting week we have had in Year 2, our trip to the Shuttleworth Swiss gardens definitely taking place as the most memorable day of the week. We want to say a MASSIVE thank you to all our parent helpers, who braved the cold and made our trip successful. We also want to say a huge well done to all the children. They represented the school beautifully and asked some excellently inquisitive questions. We hope you all enjoy a restful weekend - us teachers sure will!
Lower Key Stage 2 News
This week Year 3 have continued their science learning about magnets, testing materials to see if they are magnetic or non-magnetic. We were excited to find out that many metals are not in fact magnetic, even though the only materials that are magnetic are metal! Perhaps they will be able to tell you which metals are non-magnetic. We look forward more science next week as our topic draws to a close in the coming weeks. Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Year 4, this week, has had a lot of visitors! At the start of the week, we welcomed parents into class for a times table workshop afternoon where pupils had the opportunity to share and teach parents a variety of times table games, activities and revision methods. A big thank you to all parents who attended. Additionally, we had the first of many visits from a group of aspiring young people from a local secondary school to teach R.E. The pupils were engaged and welcoming to our guests and can't wait to welcome them back into class for some more exciting provision next week!

Upper Key Stage 2 News
Year 5 started their week with learning the different ways plants reproduce. In Maths, they were able to accurately multiply a unit fraction and non-unit fraction by an integer and continue to consolidate equivalent fractions. In English, we revised relative clauses and possessive apostrophes and learnt about modal verbs and enjoyed reading some hot tasks from last week, in Book Stop. In R.E, the children explored the importance of colour in relation to the Holi festival and reflected on what colour represents to them. In Science, the children were able to identify some physical changes that adults experience as they reach a later stage of adulthood. Our puppet rehearsals have continued with great success and we are looking forward to performing to you all next week! (Wednesday afternoon for Silver Birch and Thursday afternoon for Sycamore.) Also, a final reminder to the children participating in ‘Bikeability’ that it starts on Monday so please make sure that your bikes are tested for safety and all necessary equipment and clothing are brought in!
This week, we have been super proud of the level of maturity the children have shown in Year 6. We have completed a week of mock SATs and the children have conducted themselves extremely well and have showcased some fantastic progress. Alongside our assessments, we have also been developing our guided reading skills, reading non fiction texts to help us to infer and retrieve. We have also completed research on our polar regions, creating a line graph to compare the temperatures of the Arctic and Antarctica and considering factors as to why Antarctica is the coldest polar region.
