Dear Parents and Carers,

We arrive at the end of another very busy week here at De Havilland with a lot to share with you!

Firstly, I am not sure I could start anywhere other than giving a huge shout out to our talented Year 5 children who this week wowed the school community with their spectacular puppet shows. After months of hard work and creativity, they brought their handmade puppets to life, performing a delightful story filled with humour, heart, and imagination. The children impressed everyone with their expressive voices, clever storytelling, and artistic craftsmanship. It was wonderful to see their confidence shine on, above and behind the stage! After Thursday afternoon's show, I had the pleasure of being shown around the set by Skyla and Anne in Sycamore Class and it was wonderful to see the pride they had taken in the show and everything which went with it. A huge well done to all the children for their dedication and creativity, and a special thank you to the teachers and families who supported them. In particular, I would like to thank our friends at the Young People's Puppet Theatre who work tirelessly for our children to facilitate this project each year.

This week I have been fortunate enough to spend a large proportion of my time in classrooms across the school and it has been wonderful to see some of the excellent learning taking place. In Year Four, the children were learning about states of matter and were sharing with me what they had learnt about solids, liquids and gases, making reference to the water cycle and some of the key vocabulary which goes along with it. A big thank you to Pear class for sharing some of their learning with me. Additionally, in Year Three I had the pleasure of reading an excellent persuasive piece of writing by Ethan in Holly Class.  Ethan wrote at length about the impact deforestation was having on chameleons and included some excellent persuasive techniques as well as a range of vocabulary to make the writing really engaging for the reader. So if anyone has any complaint letters they need a hand with, Ethan is your man!

On Tuesday, we had a trust-led school review which was carried out by our primary directors, Mr. Wanford and De Hav's very own Mrs. King, as well as the the trust's Director of Inclusion, Ms. Crute-Mussell. They spent the day observing lessons, looking at learning and speaking to the children. Our school's many strengths were on display once again and I would like to publicly thank our fantastic staff team who have worked so hard this term to maintain our high standards for a range of visitors. The highlight of my day was undoubtedly spending time with some Year Six children talking about their World War Two learning: in particular, Chihamdi in Willow class who shared his view on politicians and the lengths they will go to in order to gain power!

I wish you all a very pleasant weekend and hope the sunshine stays with us a little longer.

Mr. Bostock

Early Years News

What another fun-filled week we've had! We kicked things off by exploring St. Patrick’s Day, diving into all things rainbows and shamrocks. Along the way, we strengthened our creativity, maths, and fine motor skills while also deepening our understanding of the world. Our Talk for Writing journey with Stuck in the Mud continued, and at last, Daisy was set free—yippee! We had so much fun returning Daisy’s missing print after it magically disappeared and helping Farmer Tom feed his animals. In maths, we began exploring the concept of tall and short, introducing it through our song of the week, I'm a Little Bean. We put this into practice by threading beanstalks, building and comparing tower heights with our friends, and even creating our very own measuring chart to find out who is the tallest and shortest Acorn! We would also like to say a huge thank you for your efforts with our Comic Relief dress up - you all looked amazing!

This week in Reception, the highlight of our week was following instructions to make delicious and yummy honey sandwiches. The next day, we changed the ingredients, writing the instructions as if someone else was going to eat them. It was so much fun.  Suggesting weird and gross ingredients made everyone smile. My teachers are extremely impressed with how well we could change the class story map, making it our own and then reading it back to our friends. Everyone enjoyed listening to the creative twists we added, making the story even more exciting and unique.

Key Stage 1 News

This week we have been busy exploring numbers in Year 1. We have learnt how to partition 2 digit numbers using base 10 and have learnt how to show our learning using part-whole models. Elsewhere in the curriculum, the children have enjoyed practising ball skills with Mr S, our visiting sports coach. They have been learning how to roll and throw the ball accurately and have been applying these skills to both kick-rounders and dodgeball. We are looking forward to our next PE sessions on Monday.

We have had a very busy week in Year 2, with lots of visitors and ending on a very fun dress up day for comic relief. The children had fun exploring how to measure different items using centimetres and metres, which turned in to a competition of which table could measure the most objects! We have also made butterfly feeders for the garden in Science and designed bookmarks and small bags in DT.

Parking & Driving Survey

The safety of our school community is a top priority, and we are committed to improving the experience for all pupils, parents and staff during peak traffic times. We have observed concerns regarding driver behaviour on Northdown Road and around the school, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.

This survey aims to gather firsthand experiences and insights from parents and staff about traffic flow, parking issues, and any safety concerns they may have encountered. Your responses will help us identify key problem areas and work towards practical solutions to enhance safety for everyone.

All answers will be kept confidential, and the information collected will be used solely to support discussions on improving road safety around the school. By participating in this survey, you can help us create a safer environment for our children and the wider school community.

Thank you for your time and support in making school drop-off and pick-up times safer for everyone. Please contact Emma Sanders in the Office should you wish to discuss this matter further.

Lower Key Stage 2 News

Year 3 have had an amazing week working hard learning fractions, about how the earth is a giant magnet, and completing some excellent persuasive writing. The children have been fantastic in all areas, tackling some very tricky concepts and asking brilliant questions.  Seeing their faces light up when we created our own compass in class together was my highlight of the week for sure.  Well done Year 3.

Earlier this week, Year 4 had the opportunity to showcase their maths (our first lesson on fractions) and their PSHE (friendships) learning when our visitors dropped in on lessons. As always, the children were engaged and spoke very well about what they were learning.  We are looking forward to performing a selection of songs from Young Voices to year 4 parents next Tuesday afternoon. It has  been several weeks since we last sang the songs, yet, when we had an impromptu sing-through on Wednesday afternoon, it was as if we’d never had a break!

Upper Key Stage 2 News

Year 5 kicked off this week with some Athletics in P.E. They also explored what a farmer’s year looked like in the UK during their project learning. In maths, the children continued with fractions.  They were multiplying mixed number fractions by an integer. In English, they were successful in completing some tricky comprehension questions and identifying different sentence structures. Within our P.S.H.E lesson, we explored the risks smoking might have on someone’s body. Well done for another successful week for Year 5 and an extra shout out to all the children who completed Bikeability this week!  Sadly, this week we bid farewell to our beloved puppet sessions! The children have been amazing throughout the whole process and they should be super proud of what they have achieved.

This week in Year 6, we have been problem solving with area and perimeter. We have used our knowledge from previous years to support us with reasoning maths questions and have also learnt how to find the area of a triangle. In Science, we have created our own electrical circuits and have explored what is required to make this successful. We have used our known circuit symbols to represent our circuits as circuit diagrams. In English, we have applied our writer's toolkit to create a balanced argument to answer the question 'should teachers be spies?' .We have had some very interesting debates and ideas both for and against!
