Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a memorable week here at De Hav with several highlights.
Firstly, on Wednesday we had something of a unique experience with a visit from 'TeachRex' who came in to deliver assemblies and workshops across our school. The children were thrilled and somewhat mesmerized as they were transported to a world of dinosaurs and dragons! They also learnt a lot too - for example, did you know that a T-Rex's teeth were not sharp but actually very blunt? This is due to the strength of their jaw, which would have led to their teeth chipping when they came together had they been sharp.
Secondly, on Thursday we had World Book Day with the theme of 'Becoming a Storyteller'. It was fantastic to see so many of our adults and children immersing themselves in the occasion and dressing up, some really making me smile by describing the tenuous link their outfit had with a character! A wonderful effort by all!
I do need to take this opportunity to remind parents and carers about some of the issues we are facing around drop off and pick up. Understandably this is a busy time in and around our school and this includes on the roads. I appreciate this is also a busy time for you as morning routines can often be hectic with little ones! However, regardless of this, our priority at De Havilland is safety and I am disappointed to see some parents and carers consistently parking and dropping off in areas which are unsafe. This week, we had a car blocking the driveway during drop off time which led to a tailback onto the busy Travellers Lane outside of our school. This is simply not acceptable and will be challenged by members of staff. I know you all agree that keeping your children safe is the priority so please work with us to ensure this can happen.
Ending on a more positive note, I have been delighted with the uptake of some of our extra-curricular clubs this half-term. Children have been enjoying football and tennis after-school as well as a new before school Karate club on a Friday. It has been excellent to see the children developing their skills in different areas which will undoubtedly help them in other areas of the curriculum too.
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the current endless sunshine!
Mr. Bostock
Early Years News
This week in Acorn Class, we had an exciting visit from Teach Rex, bringing our Dangerous Dinosaurs topic to life! The children were amazed as they learned more about these prehistoric creatures. Continuing with our dinosaur theme, we got creative by making our own fossil biscuits and even erupting some volcanoes—what a roaring good time! In maths, we have been having fun with the song "Five Little Speckled Frogs," using it to explore numbers in an engaging way. A huge thank you for your fantastic efforts on World Book Day! The children looked absolutely fabulous in their costumes and we had a lovely time creating our own stories!
What a fantastic week we've had in EYFS, filled with excitement and learning! We kicked off the week with all things dinosaurs. The children had the opportunity to explore the prehistoric world, and were even treated to a dinosaur workshop where they got to meet life-sized dinosaur models and learn fascinating facts. Afterward, the children channeled their inner paleontologists and created their very own dinosaur fact files, showing off their newfound knowledge. The fun didn’t stop there! We also celebrated Pancake Day in style. The children got creative by setting up their own pancake shops, complete with ingredient lists and menus. We even hosted some phonics pancake races, where the children raced to identify sounds while hopping around! In PE, our little adventurers focused on learning different ways to travel. This week’s main focus was on hopping and jumping, and the children had a blast practising their coordination and balance. Meanwhile, in maths, the children explored one more and delved into the world of teen numbers. They’ve been busy counting, identifying, and understanding numbers, helping to build a solid foundation for their early number skills.

Wow! What a week Year 1 have had! We have travelled back in time to 1666 and begun to explore what life was like in London at that time. We have been visited by Jam the dinosaur and even had a special visit from baby dinosaurs Skye and Roger. We found out some very interesting dinosaur information from them. On Thursday, we also celebrated World Book Day. We enjoyed so many different reading activities and the children looked fantastic in their costumes. Well done everybody!
What a busy week it has been for everyone in Year 2! Our highlights definitely being World Book day and our visit from the dinosaurs!! We would like to congratulate the children on their behaviour during the dinosaur assembly; they listened incredibly well and stayed quiet when asked too, Well done :)
We would also like to say how FABULOUS everyone looked in their outfits for World Book Day. We had princesses, sportsmen, superheros and so many more. Don't forget next Thursday 13th March is our trip day, so please wear school uniform, suitable footwear for walking on grass and raincoat in case and a backpack so the children can have their hands free to explore. We hope you enjoy the weather this weekend.

Lower Key Stage 2 News
Year 3 have had a fantastic week learning lots about tsunamis and in particular the 2004 Indonesian tsunami on Boxing Day. The children were really engaged and mature in the way they considered the impact of this devastating event, and they used their understanding of compass points to answer questions about the event. Elswehere we enjoyed TeachRex and used our imagination to create our own beautiful dinosaur drawings.
Year 4 have enjoyed using their number skills and problem-solving strategies to work out the perimeter of different rectilinear shapes. Particularly challenging was working out unknown sides by adding or subtracting the known sides! In English, the children have loved reading and analysing our new model text - they have really got into the idea of how a writer might use informal/colloquial language to create a diary recount that sounds like 'thoughts on the page in a chatty style'. Next week, they will be practising specific writer's tools to create this effect in their own short burst writing. Well done to everyone on a fabulous World Book day! P.S. If you wish to develop the skills we are learning in Computing lessons at home, you can explore Lexis Audio Editor on your devices at home.

Upper Key Stage 2 News
Year 5 are now on a full 3-week rehearsal schedule for the puppet performances. We began the week by setting up the stage in the lower hall and learning the technical jobs such as stage management, sound and lighting and backstage scene changing. Then the puppeteers and voices began to rehearse, trying to tie-in the movements with the dialogue. In geography, the children dissected daffodils to learn more about the parts and functions of the parts of a flower. In English, we wrote our action sequence hot tasks and became storytellers during World Book Day. In maths, the children were ordering and comparing fractions greater than one, drawing on their experience of converting improper fractions to mixed numbers. They thoroughly enjoyed the Teachrex assembly and their green screen workshop in the afternoon. In science, the learning focus was the stages of development during the juvenile stage. Home reading and home learning returns were very good again this week so well done, Year 5.
We have had some exciting themed days during the week. We welcomed Teach-Rex on Thursday and were immersed in a dinosaur themed day. We learnt about animation, the magic of a green screen and how we could produce our own film clips using an app. On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children's costumes. We spent the afternoon celebrating poetry and had a go at reciting and performing some of Roald Dahl's 'revolting rhymes' which were based on some well-known classic tales. Next week, we will be taking part in an assessment week, completing practice SATs papers. We have encouraged the children to revise any 'tricky areas' over the weekend to prepare for this. As well as this, our school days will start from 8:15am starting from Tuesday 11th March. The 8:15am starts will be on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to provide the children with some additional support as we get ready for our KS2 assessments.
