Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope this newsletter finds you well.

It has been a busy week here at De Havilland, with many highlights. One I would like to share with you took place today, when I was lucky enough to be part of a science experiment carried out by some of our children in Year 3. In relation to their geography learning about volcanoes, the children used a combination of bicarbonate soda, white vinegar and red food colouring to stage a volcanic eruption. The reaction was quite the sight and caused something of a stir! The vocabulary the children were using whilst explaining what was happening, including lava and magma, was a joy to see. A big thanks to Ezra, Nathaniel, Zac and Jo Jo, as well as Mrs. Barker, Miss Bolton and Mr. Anderson for my invitation!

This term, along with the other schools in Danes Educational Trust, De Havilland has launched its new 'Character curriculum'. Within our school community, we are committed to fostering self-insight and reflection while prioritising our children's wellbeing, emotional, social, and mental health. We emphasise skills, relationships, and learning behaviours for success beyond academics. This term, we have begun with the theme of compassion, focusing on walking in someone else’s shoes. Our children have engaged in assemblies exploring compassion for others, our planet, and ourselves. Next week, the theme of compassion will culminate in several events. We look forward to welcoming the Guide Dog Association, our chosen charity, to share how our fundraising supports a puppy’s graduation. Additionally, on Valentine’s Day, our children will experience an activity while temporarily losing their eyesight (through the use of a blindfold!). Look out for the flyer, and ask your children how blindness connects to Saint Valentine after the event!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the situation regarding PE kits. As communicated at the beginning of term, children are now expected to come into school in their PE kits on their PE day and can then stay in their kits for the remainder of the day. However, should they wish to change back into school uniform due to a particularly muddy lesson, that is also absolutely fine. I must stress that PE kits at De Havilland do not include football shirts and we would ask parents and carers to support us in ensuring children are dressed suitably for school.

I wish you all a very pleasant weekend and look forward to seeing you all at our parent consultation evenings next Wednesday and Thursday - if you are yet to make an appointment, please do so as it provides a vital opportunity to see your child's learning as well as receive an update on their progress at the midpoint of the year.

Early Years News

This week in Acorn Class we have been learning about Lunar New Year. We looked at who celebrates this, and how they do so. We focused on spreading good luck, positivity and happiness, using traditions from around the world to do so. This has included exploring food sensory trays, making fortune cookies and envelopes to share with our loved ones and creating snake pictures to represent the year of the snake! In maths we have been focusing on the number 4. We have looked at how to form the numeral in a range of ways, including using paint, numicon and counting amounts! Great job Acorns!

Reception has had a fantastic week of inquiry into space, exploring the texture of the Moon and learning about the planets. We studied Neil Armstrong’s historic achievement and created our own flags to place on the Moon. It was wonderful to hear the children discussing how becoming an astronaut requires intelligence and dedication, inspiring them to work hard in school so they, too, could one day travel to space. We thoroughly enjoyed designing our own imaginative aliens, which seamlessly led into phonics activities focused on distinguishing between ‘alien words’ and real words. Our two enthusiastic alien characters, Obb and Bob, made this learning experience even more engaging.

Key Stage 1 News

Year 1 have been very busy scientists this week! They have been using their scientific skills to measure and record the temperature and wind. We have learnt to use a thermometer to measure how cold it has been and used a windsock alongside the Beaufort scale to assess the wind level. The children have been very keen to use the measuring instruments and we are looking forward to analysing our data next week!

We have had a very fun filled week in Year 2, starting with looking at different baby animals and why animals have offspring, to ending the week as tables working together to design and colour in our very own bird that lives in the 'Garden of Dreams and Goals' as well as making traditional Jewish Potato Latkes, which we hope you enjoyed at home :) Just a few reminders for next week, Please can you book your parent consultations if you have not already, and don't forget to wear something red or with hearts on Friday for our Compassion day. We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Thank you . . .

Congratulations! In the Asda Rewards app, De Havilland Primary School raised a phenomenal £577.38. Thank you to all those who contributed to this amazing total.

Lower Key Stage 2 News

Year 3 have had a great week, working hard learning about the Ring of Fire - the band which is home to the most volcanic activity on earth - and continuing their science topic Forces and Magnetism, this week learning how to measure a foce using a force meter.  Well done to everyone in Year 3 - one week to go before a whole week away from school!

Year 4 have been getting wild this week with their trip to Whipsnade Zoo. A day of investigating animals and adaptations to their habitats made for an exciting visit (be it a little on the chilly side). The rest of this week has been making sure they are pitch perfect for their NEXT trip heading off to Young Voices at Wembley Arena this coming Monday. The fun never stops in Year 4!

Upper Key Stage 2 News

Year 5’s week started off with P.E where the children focused on hand eye coordination and balance with Mr Sritharan. In project learning this week, they explored contour lines which show how the physical geography of a landscape can affect the way the land is used for different types of farming. In English, the children planned their own exciting battle sequence and started to write their own innovative mythical story. In maths, we looked at different types of fractions and the children were able to identify and calculate accurately to create equivalent fractions. Within puppets, the backdrops are looking fantastic, as well as the props!  In Science, we explored the stages of the human life cycle and had discussions around what happens within each of them. In PSHE, the children shared their aspirations and dreams for the future, along with comparing these aspirations to a different culture. In R.E, The Five Pillars of Islam were discovered where the children showed great engagement and created some lovely posters explaining their importance.  Reminder for next Tuesday, please could the children bring in any old/spare clothing or an apron to wear during puppets as they will still be painting their backdrops. Thank you!

In Year 6 this week we have been thinking about our goals and aspirations for the future. We reflected on careers we would be interested in and have thought about our pathways in which we may get there! In maths, we looked at the very start of algebra, substituting numbers into algebraic terms. In English, we have worked hard to recap all of our key learning from our writing unit and have started to write our own flashback stories, using devices such as metaphors, time adverbials and flashback phrases. We are looking forward to our visit from the Guide Dogs Association next week and have homework to help us prepare for the visit.
